Facebook F8 Announcements

During the March 2015 F8, Facebook Developer Conference, in San Francisco, several important announcements were made, so let’s dive in:

Messenger Platform

Facebook Messenger

They recently added Payments to Messenger but now it will be a much richer, multi-media experience, incorporating new and creative ways to express yourself! Facebook developers have been given access to the platform and 40+ new apps will launch today that you can add right from within Messenger on your phone. Messenger integrates directly with the Facebook app store so you can download and use any of these apps, quickly and easily. From personalized GIFs like JibJab and Giphy, to Memes, special effects videos and audio you can share it all within a conversation! Each item you share then links back to the app you used, so your friends can download the same app and reply in a similar way.

Business Messenger

Facebook Messenger for Business

Facebook is taking the next step for businesses, especially in the retail industry! They have introduced “Messenger for Business”. Soon you will be able to interact with businesses via Messenger. During the checkout flow on a business’s site, a person can choose to start a conversation with a business, receive updates from that business on things like order confirmations and shipping status updates, and ask the business free-form questions about the order, receiving quick responses. This all happens in Facebook Messenger, instead of receiving multiple emails to your inbox. Much easier…

 

Embedding Facebook Videos

There are lots of changes coming to video posting on Facebook – from restricting your audience to featured video and playlists on the Facebook page video tab, setting custom thumbnails and in depth video analytics, Facebook Video is going to be more like YouTube moving forward!

Facebook will also now let you embed publicly shared videos on external websites, just like YouTube does. It’s very simple to do – just copy the embed code from the video you want to share on your site and paste it into your website page. Save and done – the video appears! Now of course at some point, as was discussed at the conference, Facebook will most likely monetize this extra reach at some point by selling ads to be shown at the beginning of the video…

Spherical Video

Another REALLY cool concept is the introduction of Spherical Video which can now be posted to the Newsfeed. Check it out:

Spherical video allows the user to move the camera angle as the clip plays, which can give you a birds eye view and creates a really immersive experience, making you feel like you’re really there!

 

Real Time Comments Sync

Facebook comments are now updated to integrate the comments on your website and blog with the comments made when you share the link to that post on Facebook! This gives you a seamless, integrated experience so you just have to manage one conversation, instead of two.

How to Search Facebook

With the abundance of information on Facebook, sometimes it’s hard to find the particular post you are looking for, especially if it’s a post you saw before and want to find again!  Facebook Pages and Groups are a great resource for information on a topic, but how do you navigate all the posts to find the information you need?

 

How to Search on Facebook Groups
The easiest way to search a Group for information is the Search box.  Facebook Groups have a built in Search box in the top right corner:

Facebook Freshmen – Join the group to get more fans to your Facebook Page!

 

To search for a conversation around particular subject or topic in a Facebook Group, simply type the search term in the box at the top and click on the “magnifying glass” icon to the right of the search term you typed in.  All the posts containing the search term will then appear for you to explore.

 

Remember also that Facebook Groups have uploaded Docs listed on the right side of the Group page – you might find useful information there too!

 

How to Search Facebook Pages

Of course you can explore the menu on the left side of the page to view Photos (and videos); Notes (longer posts by Page) and Discussions, plus any extra tabs the Page has, such as Reviews, imported blog posts, YouTube videos, Twitter stream etc.

 

Unfortunately Facebook Pages don’t have the Search box that appears in Facebook Groups, so there is no direct way to search a Facebook Page for content on a particular topic.  However, there is an indirect way to search your favorite Facebook Page for posts through Google.

 

To find status updates and posts on a topic, go to Google.com and type in the following:

site:http://(link to Facebook page) “search term you are looking for”

 

Sample Search:  The Social Networker Daily

For example, here’s a search on my Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/TheSocialNetworker) for the name of my daily Social Media publication “The Social Networker Daily”:

 

In Google I typed in:

Keeping Your Facebook Profile Separate from your Business?

Many people decide that they don’t want to use their Facebook personal profile to connect with potential clients, business partners and professional connections. With all the fears over privacy settings on Facebook and people getting fired over comments they made online, it’s understandable.

My opinion?



The easiest way to successfully promote your business using social media is to connect with people through your personal profile!


There, I’ve said it. Not what you wanted to hear right?

But here’s why I say that:

• People want to work with people they know, like and trust: Being friends with you on Facebook is the fastest way to do that.

• Building your ‘Likes’ for your business Page on Facebook is much easier when you have a solid target market network on your personal profile.

• Converting those friends to clients and money in your pocket is faster and simpler when those people have got to know you a little.

WARNING: Do not create a second Facebook personal profile so you can keep things separate! According to Facebook Terms of Service, you are only allowed one account.


Building A Professional Presence Online

We all know that we need to have a professional presence on Facebook, and that you should only be promoting your business through your business Page (AKA ‘Like’ Page). (You do know that right??). If you don’t already have a large email list of current and past clients or friends on your personal profile to send to your Facebook business Page, then how are you going to find potential new leads and clients for your business?

You’re going to pay for it!



Whether you use Facebook ads or Google pay per click, you will have to advertize in some way in order to generate traffic to your business Page.

By refusing to connect with people other than close friends and family on Facebook, you are missing the point of social media i.e. the word “social”. Social media is all about interaction, sharing and building relationships through that.

I think that a lot of fears are generated by the media and news stories, together with a lack of knowledge of the Facebook tools you can use to control your account. You can protect your account by knowing how to use the Facebook Privacy settings correctly and using Friend Lists to control who sees what you post.

Rules for Facebook Cover Images

Beginning Jan. 15th, 2013 Facebook will begin enforcing their terms of use for Timeline cover photos including limiting text to less than 20% of the image. Plan accordingly and know the rules to avoid being out of compliance! Comment below  if you have any questions or need any help on redesigning your cover to comply.

Facebook Page Timeline Changes

March 2, 2012

Facebook has launched the new Timeline for Pages. Watch this video from the mFC Facebook Marketing Conference to learn about the changes to the Facebook Pages for business Click here to view the video

Jeff Kanter, Product Manager, Facebook & Blaise Di Persia, Product Designer, Facebook present the new features released for Timeline for Pages.

Summary:

Facebook Pages are designed to be Mission Control for your business on Facebook and have these following new features:

Timeline Cover

  • Use it to set the tone of your Page
  • Allows a visual status update
  • Change Cover image/message as often as you want

Applications Suite

  • Appears under Cover image
  • Facebook and custom apps appear here
  • Apps created prior to Timeline will continue to work

New Controls
The new Facebook Page controls allow you to curate your Page to show the best stories:

  • Allowed – allow stories from other Pages or your fans to appear on your Page Timeline
  • Starred – allows rich media (photos and videos) to appear at double width on Timeline
  • Back Date – allows you to back date posts to show your company history and milestones on your Timeline

Pinned Posts
Due to the Timeline feature, as you add status updates, these will push older posts further down the Page. However, relevancy is important and you can use the Pinned Post feature to keep current information top and center. Use this feature to keep a post of the week, question or new OFfer feature front and center so that your fans see it.

Highlights
Highlights draw attention to certain information e.g. Friend Activity/Interaction with the Page

New Admin Panel
The new admin panel allows you to respond more quickly and in a personal way. It features:

    • Notifications of Page Likes, Comments, Tags and posts by fans to your Page.
    • New Likes – 500 most recent Likes shown
    • Messages from fans to Page – great for customer service!
    • Insights – who is talking about your Page and what is your reach

Countdown to the New Facebook Timeline!

Facebook is introducing a new innovative feature called Timeline. The Timeline will completely change the way your profile looks and how your friends view your content and information. It is currently only available to Facebook Developers but will be available for all users on September 30, 2011.

Here is what my new profile looks like:

What is the Timeline?
Your timeline is your collection of top photos, stories and life events. Some of the things you can do on your timeline:

– Add a cover image – the first thing people will see top and center when the visit your profile
– Edit your basic info
– Jump to the past
– View your activity log
– See highlights from each month
– Star stories you want to highlight
– Add life events
– Update your status
– View and add photos
– Share your app activity
– View and add photos
– Share your app activity

 

If you can’t wait a few more days and you are fairly savvy on Facebook, then you can enable Timeline for your profile page now by following the following instructions:


How To Enable the Facebook Timeline Now!


Step 1: Access Facebook Apps Developer page. If you are already using Facebook Developer Apps then click ‘+Create New App”. If not, it will ask you to allow “Request for permission”. Click “Allow”.

Step 2: Now you are on the Default Page of Developer Facebook Apps. Click 0n “+ Create New App” button on the Top Right Side to create new application.

Step 3: Once you have done that, provide a “Display name” and “Namespace” for your newly created App (use only lowercase letters, dashes and underscores; min. 7 characters.  Namespace must be unique.  You will see ‘Fail’ to the right of the box if someone else is already using that Namespace).  Then in the next step, confirm the security code.

Step 4: You will enter into the main Settings Page of your newly created App. Click on “Open graph” option which is on the left hand side of your screen.

Step 5: Create a test connection now (no-one is going to see this). So here we created an app where people can “like” (action) a “page” (object) as shown in the image below. Click on “Get Started”

Step 6: After clicking on “Get Started”, you will enter into the “Settings” page of the newly creation action. Then click on “Save Changes and Next”. Again click on “Save Changes and Next” and finally click on “Save and Finish”

Step 7: Now wait for 3-4 minutes and then visit your Facebook Home Page or Profile Page and you will see the Timeline invite at the top of the page:

Step 8: Click on “Get it now” and your Profile will be activated with the new Timeline Profile Page.

From here you can make changes to your timeline e.g. upload a Cover image etc. Stay tuned for tips on how to optimize your Timeline!

 

 

 

 

Once your Timeline is complete and looks the way you want it to, click on “Publish” button to permanently use Timeline Profile Page on your Facebook Account.
